Super Vasuki; India’s Longest Freight Train

Super Vasuki is India’s largest freight train with 295 wagons & 6 locomotives, measuring 3.95 km long. The Indian Railways’ South East Central Railway (SECR) tested a run of Super Vasuki freight train on the occasion of India’s 76th Independence Day.

On 15 August 2022, the Super Vasuki train left Korba railway station at 13:50 and traveled 267 kilometers in 11.20 hours. According to the national transporter, this is the longest and heaviest freight train ever run by the Indian Railways, and it takes around four minutes to cross a station. During the test run, the Super Vasuki freight train carried coal of approx. 25,962 tonnes gross weight, which is three times the capacity of present railway rakes in a single journey.

South Western Railway said in a statement: “To mark the beginning of Amrit Kaal, SECR formed and ran Super Vasuki, five loaded train long haul on 15th Aug 2022 as a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav Celebration.”
